To be soft is to be powerful, 2021

Embroidered thread on cotton, velvet, foam, wood, 30cm x 30cm x 9cm

A three-dimensional embroidered textile that has taken reference from architectural details from the Carreras Cigarette Factory in London, a well known example of art deco architecture, inspired by the hope of Egyptian design and symbolism. The soft, but firm cushion alludes to pillows used in ancient cultures in ceremonies, for death and rest. The title comes from a poem by Rupi Kaur, which highlights the idea that it is only through embracing our softness and vulnerability, that we can access authentic power and strength.
